5 Tips to Protect Your Skin from The Harsh Winter

A woman with beautiful skin

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your skin, resulting in dry and flaky skin. The low humidity in the winter season damages the skin cells by depleting moisture, making your skin itchy.

Your skin is your first layer of protection against bacteria and other viruses; it also protects you from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Therefore, making sure you’re giving it some extra TLC this winter.

Healthier skin will also reduce risk of skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, xerosis, etc.

Here are five tips that'll help protect your skin in cold temperatures:

1. Moisturize Daily

Moisturizing your skin is essential as it hydrates the skin cells. It's better to use a cream-based moisturizer rather than lotions if you have normal or dry skin.

For sensitive skin, opt for a moisturizer with no fragrance or lanolin. The best time to apply a moisturizer is directly after a bath so that the moisture penetrates deep into your pores and keeps your cells hydrated.

2. Clean Gently

Your skin contains natural oils that keep it naturally moisturized. This is why you need to be extra gentle while cleaning your skin, so you don't overdo it and strip your skin of its oils.

It's better to wash your face only once a day to protect your skin from the harmful chemicals usually present in skincare products. Ensure that you use products containing natural ingredients or those that are made organically, so they don't damage your skin.

3. Take Lukewarm Showers

Limit the use of soap and hot water on your skin, especially during the winter season. Take short showers or baths in lukewarm water and use a non-irritating and non-detergent based soap or body wash.

Gently pat your skin dry after every shower and use soft towel strokes to ensure you don't damage your skin.

4. Keep your skin hydrated

The dry air in the winter season can suck the moisture from your skin and leave it cracked and flaky. Install a small room humidifier to keep your skin moisturized. Make sure to regularly clean the humidifier and change the water to prevent it from harboring mold or fungus.

5. Protect from external elements

The natural elements can damage your skin if you don't protect it. Use sunscreen even during the winter season to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. If you're going to be outdoors for long periods, use a sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 or more. Not using sunscreen can lead to premature aging and skin cancer.

To protect your skin from the wind, use moisturizers or lotions that contain ceramides. Similarly, avoid going outside in extremely cold temperatures.
